How to use the startup name generator

Write one sentence about what the startup does and for whom. "Payroll for small restaurants in India" will get better names than "fintech". If you are building software, choose Tech / software so the ideas suit a tech company.

Every idea's .com is pre-screened, and taken ones are hidden. Treat the list as raw material. The best name is often a tweak of one of these, so check your final version too.

Naming a tech startup

Tech startups face the most crowded namespace there is. Short words, "-ly" and "-ify" names and most four-letter .coms were claimed long ago, and investors, customers and recruiters will all type your name into a browser.

Look for a name that survives three tests. You can spell it after hearing it on a call. The .com, or the .io or .ai your market accepts, is free. Nobody in your space already uses something close. The generator handles the domain part. "Check availability" and the full check handle the rest.

Startup naming mistakes to avoid

Most renames come from one of these, and every one is cheaper to catch now than after launch:

  • Naming the first product instead of the company, then outgrowing it.
  • Choosing a name only available with an awkward prefix ("get", "try", "hq").
  • Ignoring a similar name in the same market. That is a trademark risk, not just confusion.
  • Skipping the GitHub, social and app store checks until launch week.

Startup names that worked, and how they were made

Google
A misspelling of "googol", the number 1 followed by 100 zeros. A big idea, respelled into a name nobody else had.
Nvidia
From Latin "invidia" (envy). A foreign root turned into a coined company name.
Zillow
Blends "zillions" (of data) with "pillow" (home). Two moods in one invented word.
Skype
Started as "Sky peer-to-peer", became "Skyper", then lost the "r" because skyper.com was already taken.
Groupon
"Group" and "coupon" squeezed together. The business model, in two syllables.
Etsy
Chosen partly because it meant little. A short, open name lets the company decide what it stands for.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Choose "Tech / software" before generating and the ideas will suit a software or SaaS company. For a SaaS product name specifically, check the shortlist with the SaaS name checker, which looks at .io and npm.

Each idea's .com is checked before it is shown, and names whose .com is already registered are hidden. Most startup names that fail do so on the domain, so filtering there first saves you from falling for a name you cannot get.

It is a good start, not a clearance. The name can still clash with a registered trademark or an existing company in your market. Run the full NameSpyAI check, which includes US and EU trademark search, before you register the company or buy the domain.

Yes, with no signup, and you can run it six times every twenty minutes. The full NameSpyAI check is the paid step, for the names you are serious about.

It is sent to an AI model to generate names and cached in memory briefly so repeat requests are instant. It is never written to a database or linked to an account.

Picked a startup name? Validate it before you register it

The free check covers domains, GitHub, LinkedIn, Product Hunt and Crunchbase. The full NameSpyAI check adds US and EU trademark search, both app stores, Google results and every major social handle, then gives you one verdict.
