NameCheckerAI and NameSpyAI both help you work out whether a name is free to use. They go about it differently. NameCheckerAI is a large set of free tools: username checks, a bulk checker, an app name checker and a long list of name and slogan generators. NameSpyAI runs one search that checks a name across trademarks, domains, app stores, developer platforms and social handles, then scores the result.

The short answer

Use NameCheckerAI if you want free, no-signup tools for brainstorming and checking usernames, especially across a lot of social platforms or many names at once.

Use NameSpyAI if you have a shortlist and need to know whether a name is safe to launch. It searches the US and EU trademark registers for you and turns every check into one verdict.

The trademark difference

This is the biggest gap between the two, and it is easy to miss. NameCheckerAI's trademark page says plainly: "This page does not perform a trademark search." It helps you prepare a search term and gives you links to nine official registries. You then run each search yourself, on each registry's own site, and read the results.

That is honest, and the links are useful. But searching USPTO and EUIPO by hand takes time and some practice, and it is the step most founders skip. NameSpyAI runs the USPTO and EUIPO searches as part of every check and puts the matching marks in the report.

Neither tool gives legal clearance. A search shows you registered marks that might conflict. Whether a similar mark is close enough to matter is a legal question, so have a trademark attorney look at your final name before you file or spend real money on the brand.

Where NameCheckerAI is the better fit

Its username checker covers 19 platforms, including TikTok, Pinterest, Discord and Twitch, none of which NameSpyAI checks. If your audience spends time on those sites, that coverage matters more than anything else in this comparison.

It can also check up to 50 usernames in one go, which helps when you are still comparing a long list. NameSpyAI checks one name per search.

For brainstorming, it has more to offer. Slogan, pitch and name-meaning tools sit next to its name generators, while NameSpyAI has three generators and no slogan tools.

And it costs nothing. You don't need an account, and its pricing page lists no paid plans.

Where NameSpyAI is the better fit

The main reason to use NameSpyAI is that it runs the trademark search for you. USPTO and EUIPO results come back in the same report as the domain and platform checks.

Its domain results are also firmer. NameSpyAI checks 16 extensions against registry data. NameCheckerAI's own notes say its DNS-based check can't confirm whether a registrar will sell you a domain, and that a domain with no DNS records can still be registered.

If developers will use what you're building, a taken GitHub organisation or npm package name causes real friction. NameSpyAI checks GitHub, npm and PyPI.

You also get one answer instead of a set of tabs to compare. A full search returns a risk score, a short written verdict on what the results mean, and alternative names when the risk is high.

Finally, its brand, product and startup name generators look up each idea's .com before showing it and hide the ones already registered. In our own tests, more than half of the raw ideas had a .com that was already taken.

Using both

They work well together:

  1. Brainstorm with either tool's generators.
  2. Use NameCheckerAI's bulk checker to see which handles are free on the platforms you care about.
  3. Run a full NameSpyAI check on your top two or three names for trademarks, domains, app stores and developer platforms.
  4. Take the winner to a trademark attorney before you file or print anything.
